| We all want to lose ourselves sometimes. To find those perfect moments where you do not have a care in the world and you feel close and in harmony with all those around you. But rarely can you manufacture or plan for these moments, they simply happen. Uptight and pretentious Jamie (Michael Cera) is a person who definitely needs a moment like this to loosen him up, but he is so desperate to achieve what he believe will be a transformative high, he is missing the possibly more meaningful moments leading up to it. Jamie is living abroad in Chile and his boorish behavior is the epitome of a “rude American.” He is entitled and says everything he is thinking, but his good natured roommate puts up with it, despite the fact that Jamie clearly only wants one thing from him – to drive him to the beach to finally imbibe in some San Pedro cactus. Jamie is clearly obsessed with drugs and what he believes are intelligent, esoteric thoughts, but when he meets Crystal Fairy (Gaby Hoffmann), a free spirit literally dancing to the beat of her own drummer, he may have just met his match. | At this point in the game is there really anything to say about “Enter the Dragon” that hasn’t already been said? It’s the greatest martial arts movie of all time—we can argue all we want, and there are great examples of the genre that I also love dearly, but there’s no getting around how awesome and culturally relevant the film is. It also just turned 40-years-old. I feel like we should make it a cake with black frosting and a tombstone on it, just for laughs, but it might kick our collective asses. | This summer continues its parade of exceptional indie debuts, with Sofia Coppola's "The Bling Ring" following in the footsteps of "Frances Ha," "Before Midnight," "The East" and "Much Ado About Nothing" to score an excellent limited debut, grossing $210,001 from just 5 locations for a $42,000 per-theater-average.
Counter-programmed against the male-centric studio likes of "Man of Steel" and "This Is The End" (a trend this summer, with most of the specialty success stories being geared toward women while the studios continue to largely consider male audiences), "Bling" -- distributed by upstart A24 (which had a big success with the similarly themed "Spring Breakers" earlier this year) was a major improvement over Coppola's last film "Somewhere," which averaged $17,012 from 7 theaters back in 2010.
