| Ahead of its world premiere in the Director's Fortnight at Cannes today, Well Go USA has acquired all North American rights to "On The Job." Directed by Erik Matti, the Filipino crime thriller was inspired by a real-life scandal in which prison inmates were temporarily released from prison to work as contract killers on behalf of corrupt politicians. The cast includes many of the country's most popular mainstream actors, including Piolo Pascual and Gerald Anderson.
"'On The Job' reiterates that it is an exciting time for Filipino cinema," said Doris Pfardrescher, President, Well Go USA Entertainment. "We are thrilled we were able to acquire the movie before its premiere in Cannes and can’t wait to bring it to audiences in North America." Following its premiere on the Croisette, Well Go USA plan to theatrically release the film stateside in the fall. "All the hard work and patience has paid off," added Matti. "After almost four years, we have finally seen this movie cross over... [...] Read it at indieWIRE .... |

| In May 1971, Roman Polanski went to Monaco with documentarian Frank Simon to shadow the world's greatest Formula 1 racer, Jackie Stewart. The result, a personable chronicle in which Polanski appears on camera casually chatting with Simon and hearing about his craft, never received a proper U.S. release. Rarely screened around the world, "Weekend of a Champion" was praised by racing enthusiasts but otherwise remained a near-mythological sidenote to the more significant credits Polanski accrued during that major period of his career.
Four years ago, Polanski learned that the negative of the film was going to be destroyed in the U.K. and decided to salvage it by heading up a restoration. Now, an updated version of "Weekend of a Champion," including some 15 minutes of modern day footage added tacked onto the end -- has premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. Sales company Submarine Entertainment is currently shopping around theatrical rights, but Brett Ratner's production company plans to... [...] Read it at indieWIRE .... |

| A week after defending "The Great Gatsby" in a written review, James Franco has continued his aspirations to add film critic to his seemingly endless list of hyphenates, this time offering up his take on Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Verena Paravel's "Leviathan" (which actually has been in theaters since early March, but I guess Franco has the power to pretty much review whatever he wants, whenever he wants).
Once again writing for VICE Magazine, Franco makes clear from the get-go that he's in love with the documentary -- which focuses on the commercial fishing industry of the North Atlantic -- titling the review "'Leviathan,' I Love You: A Few Impressions." After a few paragraphs detailing the context of the evening he saw the film (including, somewhat needlessly, the fact that he's currently listening to Daft Punk and reading "Extra Lives: Why Video Games Matter"), Franco officially begins his love letter to Castaing-Taylor and Paravel's film (and to "Moby Dick"): I'm the biggest... | It was a classic moment in pop culture history: Marge Simpson -- sitting up in bed watching television -- turns to Homer and says, "You know, Fox turned into a hardcore sex channel so gradually, I didn't even notice." And while Fox hasn't quite yet moved all their production to the Valley, Marge called it back in 1995: as the number of steamy scenes seems to be on the decline in mainstream film, they're finding more and more of a home on the small screen. These days, it's not just that there's tons of sex on television -- it's how explicit it's getting, particularly on cable. And maybe that's a good thing. As far as we've come in connecting, understanding and relating to our sexuality -- to the point where we're reading "50 Shades of Grey" on the subway and "Sex and the City" now seems tame -- our society still deals with a considerable amount of shame, confusion and discomfort surrounding sexual expression. | France-based Chadian director Mahamat-Saleh Haroun's last feature, the Cannes-winning "A Screaming Man," involved father-son tensions against the backdrop of civil war. By comparison, his followup "Grigris" is something of a letdown, though it works well enough on the scale of a basic character study. The movie has a lot less on its mind and makes no drastic attempts to overreach. A straightforward tale of overcoming personal and professional challenges with no fancy dressing, "Grigris" goes down easy but offers nothing remotely fresh.
The title refers to the nickname of its slick protagonist, a young man named Souleymane (Souleymane Deme) whose killer dance moves make him a popular club presence in the small town in which he resides. Grigris' flexible physicality is especially impressive because of a bad leg that gives him a distinctive gait. Yet the disability isn't exactly a hindrance for Grigris, a seemingly well-liked presence who works for his ailing father. When their... [...] Read it at indieWIRE .... |

| Most students walk away from a typical film courses with a better knowledge of the medium’s history and an impressive vocabulary. However such a standard, superficial approach to cinema can leave the viewer unsatisfied, missing out on the rich, powerful qualities of the art form. Professor and filmmaker Chitra Neogy asks more of her students in her class "Film as a Transformative Process" at New York University. Challenging them with difficult foreign films such as Andrei Tarkovsky's "The Sacrifice" or Theodoros Angelopoulos's "Landscape in the Mist," Neogy creates an environment in the classroom that takes students into, what she calls, a deeper language of themselves.
"It’s really transformative in the sense that the kinds of films I choose to show are reflective of another language," Neogy told Indiewire. "It’s very intimate, the atmosphere, and intimidating in the sense that the films act as mirrors upon the self." With a syllabus inspired by the work and philosophies of Russian... | Greeted with a lot of big laughs and extended applause at its first Cannes press screening last night, Joel and Ethan Coen's latest love letter to music "Inside Llewyn Davis" did not disappoint. (Our own Eric Kohn went so far as to say "it isn't the minor Coen Bros. movie it looks like.")
"Inside Llewyn Davis" substitutes the bluegrass music found in "O. Brother Where Art Thou" for folk music to tell a similar "Odyssey"-like tale of a musician struggling to get by through life as an artist. Taking place over the course of several days, Oscar Isaac (in a breakthrough performance sure to garner him awards-buzz once the film lands stateside) stars as the titular singer-songwriter, while Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake and a scene-stealing John Goodman round out the colorful supporting cast of folks Llewyn meets on his dispiriting journey. T Bone Burnett produced the film's great soundtrack. Indiewire was on the scene at the press conference the day following the film's premiere. Here... [...] Read it at indieWIRE .... |

| "That's a folk song," says Llewyn Davis (Oscar Isaac) in the opening scene of Joel and Ethan Coen's aptly titled "Inside Llewyn Davis," after playing a tender melody for the cozy room at New York's Gaslight Café circa 1961. One could usually make a similar pronouncement about the Coen brothers' usually eccentric works -- yep, that's a Coen movie, folks -- but this one's a different story.
Light on plot, heavy on melody and feeling, "Inside Llewyn Davis" takes some inspiration from the career of folk singer Dave Van Ronk, but avoids focusing the trappings of a biopic or making broad pronouncements about the era. Instead, the nomadic Llewyn's fleeting misadventures, which find him drifting from one couch to the next while struggling to justify his career, lead to a delicate, restrained portrait that results in a different kind of movie than anything else the sibling have produced. Littered with catchy tunes composed by T. Bone Burnett, "Llewyn Davis" is the musical opposite of their... [...] Read it at indieWIRE .... |

Not to say that their slate is unimpressive this year. | "Television is a formidable thinking tool. You are like an analyst to whom society's subconscious would be offered wide open…" --Serge Daney
Every medium stimulates and meets the sensibility of an audience as well as, impacting its orientation, political and otherwise. Television has been historically associated with distracted cultural consumption, a medium more suited to influence viewers rather than make them think. While the written word allowed for deeper reflections and articulated, complex thoughts, TV had to rely on the superficiality of spectacular images to attract viewers' attention. Cinema somehow bridges these two realms by constituting an art form that is both entertaining and enlightening. As the 21st century started rolling, both cinema and the press started experiencing a paradigm-shifting, economic and existential crisis fuelled by the availability of free content on the internet. In the bid to preserve their traction, both cinema and editorial products lowered... [...] Read it at indieWIRE .... |

ABC has unleashed more promos for more new shows than either of the big networks that came before, and what's notable, watching them, is how male-centric both NBC and Fox's programming looks in comparison. ABC actually has some female-led series in its batch, though none of them come off as all that strong, at least in trailer form. The cream of ABC's crop, unsurprisingly, is Joss Whedon's "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." The production is slick and expensive looking, but so are plenty of other new shows -- what stands out here are the snippets of snappy dialog ("There are two ways we can do this." "Oh, is one of them the easy way?" No."). Whedon gives good geek -- he knows how to build out and respect a fantastical universe -- and while the characters do look like variations... The film -- which is based on the true story of a young man who was shot to death by a police officer at the Oakland, California Fruitvale rapid transit station -- stars Michael B. Jordan, Octavia Spencer and Melonie Diaz and received rave reviews at Sundance on top of its prizes. After hitting Cannes it will make its way to U.S. theaters on July 16th, where The Weinstein Company surely hopes it will continue to follow in the footsteps of "Beasts of the Southern Wild." That film also won big at Sundance, then followed it up with Cannes and a successful summer release. Six or so months later, it was a best picture nominee. | Larry Fessenden is best known for directing a series of spooky, atmospheric horror movies with a lot on their minds. "No Telling" was an environmentalist missive in Frankenstein's monster clothing. His masterful "Habit" toyed with the vampirism-as-disease metaphor while also incorporating themes involving urban isolation. "Wendigo" explored the darker pathways of childhood with its allegorical monster. "The Last Winter" envisioned global warming as a beast on the verge of taking us all. Working on his own terms while mentoring similarly individualistic horror filmmakers like Ti West, Fessenden has remained one of the genre's truly modern visionaries.
Given that track record, the idea that he would work on a made-for-TV movie produced by Chiller, the sister channel of the Syfy Network, at first sounds a little off. Yet "Beneath," a killer fish movie that premiered at the Stanley Film Festival in Colorado on Friday ahead of its summer release, certainly fits the Fessenden oeuvre even... A feverish vampire story strictly aimed at the adult set (think more "True Blood" and less "Twilight"), "Kiss of the Damned" stars Milo Ventimiglia as a human screenwriter who falls for a beautiful vampire named Djuna (Baume). While initially trying to resist her feelings for Paolo, Djuna eventually gives into their passion and leads him into the dark world of vampires. Their love is tested when Djuna's sister Mimi (Roxane Mesquida) comes to visit to stir up trouble.

| Years ago, Trent Harris moved to Los Angeles in the hopes of becoming a famous director. Instead, he garnered cult appeal. But maybe it's better that way.
"Y'know, you can kill somebody in Hollywood and they'll forgive you," he told me in a recent phone conversation, "but if you don't make money, that's the worst sin of all." Harris may finally receive his due: He's the subject of a traveling mini-retrospective that begins today at New York City's 92Y Tribeca. The series runs May 1 - 3 and will later travel to Los Angeles and Austin, among other places -- although when I spoke to him he was still in Salt Lake City, where he lives and works. It's also the place where he went to lick his wounds after committing Hollywood's cardinal sin with his feature debut, 1991's "Rubin & Ed," which opened to punishing reviews in the midst of the L.A. Riots. Returning to Salt Lake, where he spent his formative years, was a homecoming for the filmmaker. After high school, he spent 13 years in... [...] Read it at indieWIRE .... |
