| Man of Steel is out, it's a hit, and the sequel is on the fast-track. For everything I liked about the movie, I felt it was a bit of a letdown. I've heard from multiple people, including our own Steve Weintraub, that Man of Steel is the Superman movie they've always wanted to see. When it comes to the action, I can agree with that assessment. But when it comes to the character—the man in the suit—I felt he was absent from almost the entire movie. I can respect director Zack Snyder and screenwriter David Goyer's attempt to find a new perspective on the character and slightly reinventing the origin story to do so. Origin stories are tough because it's about working towards the character people know and love. You can kind of see that Superman at the end of Man of Steel, although I don't know how he got there.
In any case, it looks like they've arrived, and I'm interested in where the sequel will take the Man of Tomorrow. After the jump, I've listed five things I'd like to see in Man of Steel 2. [Warning: spoilers ahead.] The Blue Boy Scout I like the corny side of superheroes. In an attempt to "ground" superheroes, the light, fun aspects get left behind in an attempt for brooding, inner conflict. This works some of the time, most notably with Batman. It's easy to find the drama in a character forged in the death of his parents. Superman is the inverse. Even ... [...] Read it at Collider .... |

| When last we reported on the status of the Dumb & Dumber sequel, it had been dropped by Warner Bros. with Bobby and Peter Farrelly eyeing Red Granite to finance and a number of studios vying for domestic distribution. Today, the Farrelly brothers confirmed that Red Granite will indeed be backing the film as well as handling international distribution, and that Universal Pictures has stepped in as a domestic distributor. Fans of Harry (Jeff Daniels) and Lloyd (Jim Carrey) should now be excited that the long awaited sequel to the 1994 hit comedy can now get off the ground. Hit the jump for more.

The picture centers on the pair once again hitting the road in order to find Harry’s illegitimate daughter for a kidney transplant. . It remains to be seen whether Universal made the right move in picking up the sequel that WB dropped, but according to Heat Vision's Borys Kit, sources have the film possibly shooting this fall and releasing next year. | I'm so excited for White House Down. Roland Emmerich doesn't make smart movies, but he knows how to make damn entertaining ones. 2012 is like one gigantic third act, and we still talk about how a Mac brought down an alien mothership in Independence Day. He strikes the right balance in his action movies to make them endearingly silly, and that that silliness was sorely missing from the awkwardly grim Olympus Has Fallen. But 2013 is going to get another shot at Die-Hard-in-the-White-House, and judging by the trailer for White House Down, Emmerich is going to get it right.
I’m pleased to announce that we’re giving away passes to the Atlanta screening of White House Down. Hit the jump to find out how you can see the movie early and for free. The film stars Channing Tatum, Jamie Foxx, Maggie Gyllenhaal, James Woods, Richard Jenkins, Joey King, Jake Weber, Lance Reddick, and Jason Clarke. White House Down opens June 28th. To enter for a chance to win a code that will allow you to redeem up to 2 admit-one passes, send an e-mail to Collider.Passes@gmail.com with the subject line “WHITE HOUSE DOWN”. The screening is on Tuesday, June 25th at 8:00pm at AMC Parkway Pointe, so don’t enter if you think you’ll be unavailable. Please note that a pass is not a ticket. To guarantee a seat, please arrive at the theater early since seating is first come, first serve. Here's the trailer: And here's the official synopsis for Whi [...] Read it at Collider .... |

| Well it appears that director Robert Rodriguez won’t have two films opening within weeks from each other after all. The Weinstein Company announced today that Rodriguez’s long-awaited sequel Sin City: A Dame to Kill For has been pushed back nearly a year, from this coming October to August 22, 2014, making Machete Kills Rodriguez’s sole release this year. That’s some pretty disappointing news for fans who have already been waiting eight years for the promised Sin City follow-up, so hopefully the finished product will be worth it. The film’s impressive ensemble cast is lead by Josh Brolin as the physically-altered Dwight (played by Clive Owen in the first film), who is “hunted down by the only woman he ever loved, Ava Lord (Eva Green), and then watches his life go straight to hell.”
Sin City: A Dame to Kill For is currently the only film slated for release on that August date. The pic also stars Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Bruce Willis, Rosario Dawson, Jaime King, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Dennis Haysbert, Christopher Meloni, Jeremy Piven, Ray Liotta, Juno Temple, Stacy Keach, and Julia Garner. | Earlier this weekend, Vin Diesel announced to his Facebook fans that his new film Riddick would be making its way to this year's San Diego Comic-Con. The star/producer premiered a Riddick Comic-Con poster on his page, and noted "It's been over decade, since I've been to Comic-Con..." It's a lot more crowded, Mr. Diesel. As for where this will fit into Comic-Con's programming, I can't imagine the panel will be anywhere but Hall H, and it's possible that Universal Pictures will make Riddick part of a larger presentation. The studio also has the geek-friendly Kick-Ass 2 on the way (August 16th); additionally, if there's some footage ready and the release date holds, Comic-Con wouldn't be a bad place to debut the first look at the long-delayed fantasy action film, 47 Ronin, which is currently set for Christmas.
Hit the jump to check out the Comic-Con poster for Riddick. The film also stars Katee Sackhoff, David Bautista, Jordi Mollà, Matt Nable, Bokeem Woodbine, Raoul Trujillo, Nolan Gerard Funk, and Karl Urban. Riddick opens September 6th. | After months of speculation, we have an answer: on its first weekend in theatres Man of Steel earned an estimated $113 million from 4,207 locations. That does not include the $12 million from its Thursday evening previews, but the number was still big enough to give Superman the new record for June.
Title Weekend Total 1. Man of Steel $113,080,000 $125 2. This Is The End $20,500,000 $32.8 3. Now You See Me $10,320,000 $80 4. Fast & Furious 6 $9,400,000 $219.5 5. The Purge $8,200,000 $51.8 6. The Internship $7,000,000 $30.9 7. Epic $6,000,000 $95.4 8. Star Trek Into Darkness $5,660,000 $210.4 9. After Earth $3,750,000 $54.2 10. Iron Man 3 $2,908,000 $399.6 The previous weekend record for June was set in 2010 by Toy Story 3 with $110.3 million, ahead of the $108.9 million of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Tf2’s number did not include its first three days, however, which add up to $127.8 million. Much more relevant to Warner Bros. is the fact that Man of Steel more than doubled the opening of Superman Returns. In June of 2006, the studio’s last stab at Superman debuted with $52.5 million on its way to a $200 million US total and $39 [...] Read it at Collider .... |

| Man of Steel earned an estimated $44 million on Friday: its first official day in theaters. That total includes $9 million from midnight screenings but not the $12 million from the “advanced screenings” that began Thursday night at 7 pm. So far, the Superman reboot has earned over $56 million in its US debut and is now on track for around $112 million (or $124 total) through Sunday. That would give Man of Steel the highest June opening of all time: ahead of both Toy Story 3 and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen - though the latter’s Wednesday release date makes comparing weekend results somewhat pointless.
The takeaway here is that Man of Steel is in excellent shape. With or without Thursday night’s grosses, the film will far exceed Warner Brothers’ projection of $85 million by Sunday - a number it took Superman Returns six days to reach back in 2006. We’ll have more box office news tomorrow including coverage of This is The End, the comedy that is successfully counter-programming Superman. Title Friday Total 1. Man of Steel $44,050,000 $56.05 2. This is the End $6,850,000 $19.15 3. Now You See Me $3,290,000 $72.9 4. The Purge $2,900,000 $46.5 5. Fast & Furious 6 $2,700,000 $212.8 [...] Read it at Collider .... |

Based on the Boston Globe's Pulitzer Prize-winning articles chronicling reports of sex abuse within the Church, the project is said to be in the vein of All the President's Men, and would star Damon as lead reporter Mike Rezendes. Damon has yet to see a script but the filmmakers have had the Boston-native in mind for the role during its two years of script development.

| Last night I attended the premiere of Hatchet III at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood. While I was there I got a chance to check out the film and chat with the folks involved on the red carpet. The film itself is a fun final act to the trilogy, and though it’s more in the vein of action-horror, as opposed to the straight up slasher style of the first two, it’s a fitting (possible) end of the franchise. While fans might have worried with Adam Green stepping down as director, director BJ McDonnell, who worked as a cameraman on the first two films, understands the tone and the characters previously established, and with Green on board as Writer/Producer Hatchet III feels right at home in the saga of Honey Island Swamp. As a bonus, the film is loaded with Easter eggs for fans of the series, so odds are if you enjoyed the first two you’ll have a good time with this one. | Between the record-breaking grosses of May and next week’s Man of Steel launch, this was supposed to be a quiet weekend at the box office. Universal’s The Purge had other plans. The low-budget horror film took first place and more than doubled its pre-release projections with an estimated $36.4 million from 2,536 locations. The box office bonanza did not extend to The Internship, however. The comedy opened in fourth with an estimated $18.1 million – half of what The Purge realized in 800 fewer theatres.

| What most expected to be a quiet weekend at the box office is making big news for one new release. The Internship is not that release. The Fox comedy earned an estimated $6.55 million from 3,365 locations on Friday and is now on track for a first-weekend in the $18 million range. That’s slightly higher than pre-release projections for the Vince Vaughn/Owen Wilson feature, but lower than the $20 million-plus that a star-driven summer release should be earning. If The Internship is destined for disappointment, The Purge looks like a legitimate sensation. With an estimated $16.7 million from 2,536 locations on Friday, the low-budget horror film equaled its entire weekend projection in just one day. | For the past couple of weeks, Director Michael Bay has been unveiling the cars that will eventually become giant robots in Transformers 4. Today, he's revealed the 2013 Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 Coupe will be part of the gang. He doesn't say if it will be an Autobot or a Decepticon, and since I don't follow the series, I'm not going to speculate. If you are die-hard Transformers fan, tell us in the comments what you think this car could turn into.
Hit the jump to check out a high-resolution image of the Lamborghini Aventador. The film stars Mark Wahlberg, Nicola Peltz, T.J. Miller, Sophia Myles, Li Bingbing, Jack Reynor, and Kelsey Grammer. Transformers 4 opens June 27, 2014. Via Michael Bay. [...] Read it at Collider .... |

| One of the earliest official set images that director Bryan Singer revealed over the course of production on X-Men: Days of Future Past was a peek at some concept art for the character of Beast, played by Nicholas Hoult. While we saw Hoult go full beast-mode in X-Men: First Class, the concept art hinted at a bit of a redesign for the character in Days of Future Past. Sure enough, a batch of unofficial set photos for DOFP reveal that the character does indeed look fairly different from what we saw in the first film, as we get a look at Hoult in his brand new Beast makeup. Moreover, the images reveal a pretty intense-looking throwdown between Beast and Michael Fassbender’s Magneto.

Stone cited scheduling issues for her departure from the film, which also stars Jessica Chastain, Benedict Cumberbatch and Charlie Hunnam. If Wasikowska's own schedule works out, she would play "a young author named Edith Cushing who discovers that her charming new husband is not who he appears to be," according to The Wrap. Hunnam will play another lead while Cumberbatch and Chastain star as aristocratic siblings. Crimson Peak is expected to begin production early next year. [...] Read it at Collider .... |

| The first movie adaptation of Rick Riordan's best-selling novel series Percy Jackson and the Olympians was not well-received critically, but banked enough box office bucks on the global scale to warrant another shot. We were granted an early look at the upcoming sequel, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, and it appears that general audiences and book fans should be happier this time around. There's plenty of action to be found in the first act alone with much more promised throughout the film. New additions Stanley Tucci, Anthony Head and, of course, Nathan Fillion bring some veteran star-power to the young adult picture and special attention is given to both new audiences and fans of the novels alike. Hit the jump for more, and be sure to tune in later this week for video interviews with director Thor Freudenthal, and stars Logan Lerman, Brandon T. Jackson and Leven Rambin.
Collider was invited to check out the first act of Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters along with a short action montage, all introduced by director Freudenthal. I'll keep this preview spoiler-free and won't mention anything that hasn't been shown in the trailers already. Right off the bat, Freudenthal uses the film's opening to prepare audiences for a lot of time spent out at sea, as if the title wasn't enough of an indication. He also uses a narration from the film's title hero in order to bring newcomers up to speed and reintroduce the audience to the world of Percy Jackson. The [...] Read it at Collider .... |

| World War Z has become a question mark. It's loosely based on a best-selling novel of the same name, stars Brad Pitt, and has zombies, which is a fairly popular disaster trope. On the other hand, there were the production problems that managed to become public, and the studio spent more money to get the film back on track. So has the problem been solved? I hope so. While I've been a bit bummed that we haven't gotten to a good look at the zombies in the trailers or posters, World War Z has the advantage of taking a zombie flick to a global setting, which is where the genre really hasn't gone before. It's still a question, but we're giving you a chance to find out the answer early.
I'm pleased to announce that we're giving away 15 admit-two passes to the Atlanta screening of World War Z. Hit the jump to find out how you can see the movie early and for free. The film also stars Mireille Enos, Matthew Fox, James Badge Dale, and David Morse. World War Z opens in 3D on June 21st. To enter for a chance to win an admit-two pass, send an e-mail to Collider.Passes@gmail.com with the subject line “WORLD WAR Z”. The 2D screening is on Thursday, June 6th at 12:00pm at Regal Atlantic Station, so don’t enter if you think you’ll be unavailable. Please note that a pass is not a ticket. To guarantee a seat, please arrive at the theater early ... [...] Read it at Collider .... |

| From Blumhouse Productions, the horror thriller The Purge illustrates the government’s response to an America overrun by escalating crime and overcrowded prisons. For a 12-hour period, once a year, any and all criminal activity, including murder, becomes legal. And on this one particular night, James (Ethan Hawke) and Mary Sandin (Lena Headey), and their two children, will learn just how vicious the outside world can be.
During a press conference at the film’s press day, actor Ethan Hawke talked about why the subject of families in peril make for good suspense and horror films, what he enjoys about making genre movies, getting to film somewhat chronologically, how much fun the fight scenes were, what he thinks this film says about society, and whether he believes humans are inherently violent. He also talked about how odd it is that The Purge and Before Midnight both have the same R rating, and why he looks doing small projects. Check out what he had to say after the jump. Question: Why do you think families in peril make for good suspense and horror films? ETHAN HAWKE: Well, the family in peril trip is kind of obvious, in that it’s everybody’s biggest fear. There’s a moment in the movie where you see the husband and wife loading guns, and he teaches her to take the safety off. It’s every parent’s worst nightmare. Nightmares are a strange thing. Your worst fear is sometimes something you enjoy thinking about, for so [...] Read it at Collider .... |
