The film rights to Nice, a darkly comic 1998 novel from Jen Sacks, have just been acquired by Fox Searchlight, who are eying the project as a potential starring vehicle for Hollywood good girl Reese Witherspoon.
Witherspoon, who will produce the film, would star as a magazine writer who "accidentally kills her boyfriend." After successfully dumping the body, she discovers killing her boyfriends is much easier than breaking up with them.
Originally developed for Helen Hunt in 1999, the project fell apart when Warner Bros. tried - and failed - to lighten the book's obviously dark tone. Searchlight should have no such problem though - they're asking writer Ben Queen to maintain the edginess that made Nice such an attractive property in the first place. Smart move.
