Russell Brand To Drop Dead... Fred?
Universal is reportedly bringing Fred back to life with a remake of the 1991 cult classic Drop Dead Fred. Rising star Russell Brand will take over as the eponymous imaginary friend, originally played by fellow Brit Rik Mayall. Dennis McNicholas, a contributing writer on Universal's Land of the Lost remake, will be working on this one as well - with the aim of making the new Fred "in the tone of 'Beetlejuice,' building a universe around the concept of imaginary friends." The '91 original starred Phoebe Cates as Lizzie. After losing her job and her husband over the course of one lunch hour, she's forced to move back home and reunite with her childhood imaginary friend. If you're a fan of the original, tell us: does it deserve a remake or would you prefer Fred stayed dead? Share

I agree this was my fav movie as a child. After I got married i found out my hubby derek had never seen it, and had to show him that it is the BEST! movie ever. I do have to admit Russell Brand would be a great pick, but come on people stop remaking all of the classics. Halloween has already been turned into a joke not to mention all the others that have been disgraced, just STOP! already. Somethings should just be left alone.

When I first read that Russell Brand was being considered for the part of Fred in the remake of the film Drop Dead Fred...I literally started laughing out loud because it is such an obvious choice. I love the idea of Russell Brand playing Fred. I think he'd make the perfect love-able/hate-able character for a new generation of Drop Dead Fred fans.

Drop Dead Fred should not be remade! nothing will ever be as good as the original!!! no one will be as good as rik mayall. i grew up watching drop dead fred since i was a little kid. one of my favorite movies and no remake will ever be as good!

I don't know about all of you guys, but I think Russell brand can do it. Compared to ever other actor in Hollywood, he's probably the closest one to be able to imitate Rik Mayall. I'm not saying the remake of the movie will be amazing (the original will always be god!!) But if they remake it with better effects, I'm sure a lot of people will enjoy it, maybe even love it?

Just one thing though... Do NOT let 'M.night Shamylan' do the fucking remake! He'll ruin, crush and destroy the movie like he did with 'The last airbender' He'd probably get a black guy to play Fred, and a loud obnoxious girl to play Elizabeth.

I think that this is a positively horrid idea! No one can be drop dead Fred except for Rik Mayall. I've nothing against Russel Brand but he's no drop dead fred. Leave it alone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

they are going to ruin it, the orginal will always be better. they should make one with the same pple in it and make all of them grow up.

They are going to ruin this movie for me. why change it. Beetle juice was good but drop dead fred was too. why mix the two? LEAVE IT ALONE!

I absolutely loved the original (used to watch it at least once a week as a kid, even dubbed my mom the mega-beast having no idea what it meant) and definately wouldnt mind seeing a remake, but it almost seems like theyre trying to change it a bit, and thats whats not cool, it'll just kill the name, but a simple cure to that is....if the remake is horrible, heres the cure
Step 1- go wash my eyes
Step 2- Watch the original
Step 3- Repeat steps 1 and 2 until I fall in love with the original again.
Step 4- Go back to enjoying my life

Drop Dead Fred is one of my all time favorite movies. I would go see the remake but I doubt it will be good. Russell Brand is no where near as funny as Rik Mayall

I don't think there's any way to improve the movie by remaking it, that being said, a bad remake isn't going to take anythig away from the original...the remake won't be as awesome but it might be interesting to see another take on the movie however I think that Russell Brand has neither the childish enegry and silliness nor the sweetness that Rik Mayall brought to the role which is unfortunate because I feel that's really what made the movie great well that and the superb talented hotness that is Phoebe Cates it's really amazing to watch the scenes where Fred's making her do something while invisible...on second thought, I don't think a remake is such a good idea

No, leave it how it is. Remakes suck, take a look at Halloween, The Omen, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, need I say more?

Ashley says at 15 Sep 2009, 7:10 pm (EST):
I agree with James. This could definitely ruin the classic Drop Dead Fred for me.

James Phillips says at 10 Jul 2009, 10:15 am (EST):
Russell brand is a great actor no doubt but drop dead fred is an awsome film and i think remaking it is going ruin it, ill have to wait and see.
