The Poker House (2009)
Based on actual events, "The Poker House" marks the directorial debut of veteran actor and Iowa native, Lori Petty. The film is a riveting portrait of poor, small town life in Iowa, circa 1976; reviving the sprit of Marvin Gaye, seedy bars, and the ever present allure of illicit activities and substances. Up-and-comer Jennifer Lawrence stars as Agnes, the oldest of three sisters living with a drug addicted mother in the ‘Poker House’ - a brothel, drug Mecca and gambling oasis for local squatters. Chloe Grace Moretz and Sophia Bairley star as Agnes’ younger sisters trying to cope with their dire circumstances. Selma Blair stars in an amazing performance as their strung-out mother, Sarah.
